In August, 2018, the Basins, Tectonics, and Geodynamics group at New Mexico Tech started working on a new project studying the Darwin Basin in eastern California. Preliminary work suggests that this basin is an excellent outcrop analog for deepwater facies within the Midland and Delaware Basins for which there are currently few good surface examples.

This project is in collaboration with a Northern Arizona University project studying the Keeler Basin to the north, and integration of these studies will build a complete basin history of this late Paleozoic basin. Preliminary results from this project were presented at AAPG in May 2019 and by Lochlan Vaughn (former M.S. student) at GSA in September 2019. A very detailed analysis of the Darwin Basin by Lochlan Vaughn was just published in GSAB.
